Vanadinite Cluster/Specimen

Vanadinite is a rare member of the Apatite family, combining lead, vanadium, oxygen, and chlorine. Vanadinite's origin and discovery is a bit unknown with certain individuals claiming ownership years before its official discovery in 1838. In 1801 it is on record that Andrés Manuel del Río discovered a  new mineral in Mexico. He went on to call it "brown lead" and believed that this foreign was comprised of a new element. Over 30 years later in 1838 F. Von Kobell officially documented this stone and proved that the element within was actually Vanadium, which had already been discovered. He chose to name Vandinite after its chemical composition, thus closing the chapter on Vanadinite's origin story. Vanadinite forms red, orange, and brown prismatic crystals that are sometimes found in oxidized parts of lead deposits. The most abundant Vanadinite sources include Morrocco, Mexico, and the U.S.A.
